Location: Whitesburg, Kentucky
Position Type: Full-Time
Salary Range: $55,000–$60,000 annually, plus benefits

ABOUT WMMT
Appalshop is a nationally recognized nonprofit arts, media, and education organization rooted in the culture and communities of Central Appalachia. Since 1985, WMMT has served as Appalshop’s non-commercial community radio station, broadcasting music, storytelling, cultural preservation, grassroots journalism, and public affairs programming throughout Eastern Kentucky, Southwest Virginia, Southern West Virginia, and beyond through digital streaming.
WMMT’s mission is to amplify the voices, music, experiences, and social issues of Appalachian people while creating space for community participation, creative expression, and public dialogue that strengthens the region.
WMMT is powered by a small dedicated staff and more than 50 community volunteers.
POSITION SUMMARY
The WMMT General Manager provides strategic, operational, financial, and community leadership for WMMT 88.7 FM. The General Manager is responsible for ensuring the station’s long-term sustainability, mission alignment, regulatory compliance, fundraising growth, community engagement, and daily operations.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
Leadership & Strategic Direction
- Lead the overall vision, health, and sustainability of WMMT
- Develop long-range strategic plans
- Ensure mission alignment across programming and operations
- Participate in Appalshop-wide initiatives
- Serve as bridge between WMMT and Appalshop programs
Administration & Operations
- Oversee daily operations
- Prepare budgets and annual plans
- Monitor financial reporting
- Ensure audits and compliance
- Coordinate staffing and workflows
- Maintain policies and procedures
Staff & Volunteer Management
- Supervise staff and contractors
- Support staff development
- Recruit and support volunteers and interns
- Foster inclusive workplace culture
Fundraising & Development
- Lead fundraising strategy
- Coordinate fund drives
- Write grants and reports
- Cultivate donors and funders
- Maintain fundraising systems
Government & Compliance
- Ensure FCC and CPB compliance
- Maintain public file
- File required reports
- Coordinate legal and administrative support
Community Engagement
- Serve as primary spokesperson
- Build community partnerships
- Support Community Advisory Board
- Maintain digital presence
- Represent WMMT publicly
Technical Coordination
- Coordinate with engineer
- Support station equipment and systems
- Troubleshoot operational issues
QUALIFICATIONS
- Leadership and collaboration skills

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
